2013 Homecoming Parade

2nd Grade is SO lucky to be able to walk in the LHS Homecoming parade each year! This year, we carried signs that said "Class of 2024"! I was really impressed with our class' behavior throughout the whole parade! They made Challenger proud and sat so nicely on the curb after we got done walking! Way to go Top Dogs!

^^^ Thanks for the tweet, Mr. Wienen!

PS On a very random note, our blog got a shout out from another Minnesota blogger! She just filled my bucket way up! Go check it out at http://luckylittlelearners.blogspot.com!

If You Can Crack an Egg, You Can Crack an iPad!

We use our iPads everyday, and for every subject! We are so lucky to be learning and teaching in a 1:1 school! Before we got our iPads, we completed the egg test over the course of 2 days, to prove that we are responsible and ready for our own iPads. Basically, every student was in charge of caring for a raw (not hard boiled!!!) egg. We took our eggs everywhere we would take an iPad.

We were inspired by Mr. Deris and his first grade class. Here is the video we watched to get pumped up for the big test:

We did have a few eggs crack, but we learned some valuable lessons and had some teachable moments due to the broken eggs.

Here are some things we learned:
1. Don't take your egg out of the cup. You wouldn't take your iPad out of the case.
2. Don't leave your egg or iPad on the edge of a table.
3. Carry your egg and iPad with two hands!
4. Don't run with your egg or iPad.
4. Be gentle!
5. Carry one thing at a time! Don't try to carry your iPad with anything else.
6. Above all, IF YOU CAN CRACK AN EGG, YOU CAN CRACK AN IPAD! :)

Many more pictures of us using our iPads and our iPad rules will be posted soon! I sent this idea out to all staff at our school, and it was so fun seeing students in different grades do the test! It has been interesting to compare results and what the students have learned from cracked eggs. Miss Reese's first graders even brought their eggs to our classroom to show me what they were up to! I love it! :)

We LOVE Spelling City!

Our class is all signed up for Spelling City! Spelling City is a free website and app that we use to practice our spelling words each week. We just downloaded the app yesterday on our iPads and we
are IN LOVE with it already! :) :)

Avery was our Tweeter of the Day today and she tweeted to Spelling City and got a reply from another class and Spelling City! How cool is that? Here's how the conversation went down...

Here's how you can get to our Spelling City site at home! You can click the pictures to make them bigger!

1. Go to www.spellingcity.com/2ndGradeProwlers. The page should look like this:

2. Click the list of words under the heading "Lists Not in Groups". The list will be named for the week the spelling words are for. For example, this week's words are named Sept. 16-20. There will only be one list each week. After you click the list name, it should look like this:

3. The choices to work with these words are listed in the colored circles. With our membership, the Top Dogs can take a test, get tips about their words with Teach Me, or Play a Game with their words. Our favorite game so far is Hang Mouse!

That's it! Easy peasy! If you're interested in the app, it's also free and it's called Vocabulary Spelling City!

Picture Catch Up: The First 2 Weeks of 2nd Grade!

If you follow our class on Twitter or visit my Instagram you've seen a ton of pictures from the first two weeks of school already! I just realized I hadn't posted those pictures on our blog! I've taken over 200 pictures in the first two weeks of school. Here are just a few of them!
Madi was Top Dog of the Week last week, and her parents brought her hermit crabs in for show and tell!

Our Chester the Raccoons we made on the first day of school are hanging up in our room. Come check them out!

Last Monday, Mrs. Lindsey Johnson and I trained our K-3 teachers and specialists on iPads! It was so fun to teach our staff and get them excited about rolling out their iPads in their classrooms!

Here's our first Tweeter of the Day picture of the school year! :)

And our 2nd Tweeter of the Day picture with Julia! :)

We made these on September 11, and they are being displayed on our Top Dog Wall of Fame! :) Each student has a clip with his or her name on it. We change what is hung up each week.

This display is hanging by the school office! We used David Shannon books to build our classroom and iPad rules together this year.

Day 1 of Read to Self! We made it 4 minutes and 13 seconds! Whoot whoot!

Day 3 of Read to Self! What an improvement!

Our first class picture! We have walked out on the prairie two times now. We love being and learning outside! :)

We LOVE watching Tumble Books during snack break! You can access Tumble Books at home by visiting nwrlib.org/kids!

Welcome to the World, Baby Chay!

Did you hear that Mrs. Schantz from Flying Through Fourth Grade had a baby boy on Monday? They named him Chay, and he is the most perfect baby I have ever seen! I finally got to visit him today, and I have to say I am absolutely smitten with him!

When Mrs. Schantz comes back to school in October, we will be seeing their class almost every Friday for buddy reading and other fun activities! They are our buddy class and I can't wait for our classes to start spending some time together! We are lucky to have each other!

Welcome to the world, baby Chay! :)
Cuddy borrowed our chalkboard to share the news with the world!

Tweeter of the Day!

We started Tweeter of the Day today! You can read our Twitter feed without being on Twitter by using the gadget right here on our blog! But, we would LOVE it if you followed us so we can tweet right to you! Today's Tweeter of the Day was our Top Dog of the Week, Madi! Here is her Tweeter of the Day picture with me! I'm also adding her picture to the Top Dog of the Week tab.

We explored our Twitter page today and learned what followers are. We also talked about hashtags and how to tweet pictures. We learned that our principals are even on Twitter! I love that we can tweet together from my iPad or Mac Book Air, or we can tweet from their iPad minis! So cool!
