Thank you PTA!

Last week, we hopped on the bus and traveled over to see The Jungle Book play! The kids were very well behaved on the bus and had excellent play etiquette at the show. You can all be very proud of these kids! Here are a few pictures I snapped during this fun morning!

THANK YOU PTA for paying for this field trip! We are feeling very thankful and spoiled!

Congratulations October Readers!

These amazing readers read over 400 minutes in October and received a free pizza certificate from Pizza Hut! Remember, we learn how to read by practicing all of the skills and strategies we are learning! Keep up the good work at home! I am super impressed with you all!

We Are Bucket Fillers!

Has your child told you about our Bucket Fillers in our room? It's based on this book by Tom Rath and Mary Reckmeyer. You can watch a video of this book by clicking play on the video below.

The premise of the book is that everyone walks around everyday with an invisible bucket. When we give and receive compliments or people notice the good things we do each day, our buckets are full. When people criticize us or do rude things to us, our buckets become emptier. Each day, we can choose to be a bucket filler or a bucket dipper.

Whenever we finish our work, or have an extra minute or two, we use that time to write bucket filler notes to each other. I love seeing all of these buckets filling up with compliments for each other! It makes my heart very happy to see all that compassion in our classroom. Keep your eyes open for these notes to come home in their DOG books throughout the year!

It Looks Like November in The Doghouse!

Here are a couple of things we have been working on this month that I happened to snag some pictures of! Don't you just love this month? I'm feeling very THANKFUL for my amazing students!

We practiced using labels and made this project to decorate our hallways! Double score!
We read H is for Honor and brainstormed ideas about why Veterans are heroes!
Thank you families for working so hard on this family take-home project! The discussions we have had about being thankful have truly made an impact! Thanks!

Staff Spotlight

Hi families! I thought it would be nice if every once in a while I wrote a little feature on some of the awesome staff members that work with your kids everyday here in school. The first staff member I want to highlight is Mrs. Shea. She is an instructional coach here at school and her job is to work with teachers and students to make everyone's teaching and learning the best it can be. The Top Dogs absolutely love her to pieces and enjoy every second of her time in our room. Mrs. Shea and I are actually friends from about 7 years ago when I was a student teacher in Grand Forks at her school. Here are some questions I had her answer to help you get to know her a little better!

What is your favorite part of your job?
It’s a toss-up between the kids and the teachers I get to work with every day.

What do you like to do when you’re not at school?
Two hobbies of mine are yoga and reading.

Do you have any kids? How old are they?
My husband and I have two kids.  Natalie, our daughter, is 18 years old and a senior at WFHS. Nolan, our son, is 13 and an eighth grader at Cheney Middle School.

What’s your favorite food?
Peanut Butter!

What is your favorite color?
I like them all, but I seem to have a lot of things that are purple. I even chose it for my font color! J

If you could have any superpower, what would it be?
My positivity is my superpower!

Who was your favorite teacher and why?
My second grade teacher was my ALL TIME Favorite, and I’ve had a lot of great teachers. She really taught me to love reading and writing. A fun fact: I sought her out and did my student teaching with her when I became a teacher!

What do you like to do with your family?
Spending time with my family is so much fun for me and I like anything we do, as long as we are together! My family enjoys musical theater, games and shows on the Food Network!

Anything else we should know about you?
My husband is Mr. Shea and some people know him as a principal in West Fargo.  He worked at Cheney Middle School and now works at Independence Elementary.  He inspired me to become a teacher.  He is my best friend, too!

Sam and Landon both made super creative pumpkins for the library pumpkin patch contest! We love Mo Willems, and the Bison pumpkin was a favorite among staff and students. Amazing work Landon and Sam! I am so proud of you both!

Pumpkin Day 2014

Pumpkin Day 2014 was a huge success in our classroom! We did lots of writing, math, and science activities with our pumpkins. The heaviest pumpkin was 16 lbs and the lightest pumpkin was 2 lbs. We learned that pumpkins float, and some kids even predicted that correctly! We labeled all the parts of a pumpkin and learned about the life cycle of a pumpkin. It was a busy, fast day but I had lots of parents come in to help out! Thank you parents for sending in a pumpkin for each child to school! Thank you also for sending so many ingredients for pumpkin brew! Learning can be messy and sometimes loud, but that doesn't stop me! The pictures of these kids digging into their pumpkins are priceless! Look at those faces!

Shout out to Landon's dad, Aiden's mom, Gracelynn's mom, Cody's mom, and Sam's mom! We loved having your support on Pumpkin Day! Thanks for coming in.
