Meet the Teacher at Top Dog Teaching

Hi everyone! Since I have some new followers, new students in my class, and new people visiting my little blog, I decided to write this updated all about me post! I hope you enjoy it! I'd love to learn more about YOU! Where are you reading from? Please leave a comment below and share something, anything, about yourself! :)

Here are 10 facts about me
(in no particular order)...

1. I graduated from UND with a double major in Elementary Education and Early Childhood Education in May of 2008. I also just received my Masters Degree at UND in August of 2014 with a MS Elementary Education. I get to speak to future teachers once a semester on campus, and it's always one of my favorite days. I am a proud 2x UND alumni, and oh, by the way…. I’m a HUGE UND FAN!!!!  This has a lot to do with my friend Zane McIntyre being the goalie of the hockey team. He comes to read to my class every year as a Mystery Reader, and you can read tons of posts and watch the news stories on his visits by clicking on his name under the "tags" section of my blog.

Me, Zane McIntyre, and Beth Hoole of KVLY News

Mamma Mac  (Zane's mom) and Me
2.I have two crazy, funny, sweet, and sometimes naughty dogs that are spoiled rotten! Madi Mae turned 5 in October, and she is a Schnoodle. Dudley aka Duds (very appropriately named, I might add) is a Shorkie, and he turned 5 in March. They love kids!

3. I am married to a fourth grade teacher, Mr. Eddy Delzer. We both get to teach in the same school district, which is so awesome! We met playing in a golf tournament against each other, and the rest was history!

4.  I have played golf since I was old enough to drive the cart, and all the way through college. I am still close friends with the girls I played with at UND, and I love playing the sport. I don't have enough time to play golf like I used to, which can be frustrating for a competitive golfer like me!

5. I am honored to be a contributing writer for the leading educational technology website in the United States, EdSurge.com. You can read my first article for them here. I will be writing another article about Digital Citizenship SOON!

6. I was created and put on this earth to teach. I can't imagine doing anything else in the whole world. My mom was my kindergarten teacher, and I knew since then I wanted to teach! My dad was my music teacher from grade 5 until I graduated high school. Teaching kids is my passion in life, and I am blessed beyond words to be able to do what I do every single day. My job is to help kids love learning, what's better than that!? The hardest part of my job is that it matters everyday. That's also the best part of my job! I think kids should love where they get to learn, and I love designing classrooms!

My mom and dad, my biggest cheerleaders!
We recently moved back to North Dakota to teach, and we are loving the big city and our new district! We feel very fortunate and blessed to be where we are now! This is my seventh year of teaching.

More classroom pictures can be found on my blog under "Peek in My Classroom"!
7. I love dogs, chevron patterns, and coffee. Anyone who knows me knows I love everything chevron. I love to wear it and decorate with it!  Even my mini-me is wearing a chevron dress! I have a lot of energy most of the time, and people always ask me how I do it. Here's the secret: I drink a lot of coffee! My kids at school ask me why I like coffee so much, and I tell them I drink it so I can keep up with them! Last year we were graphing our favorite foods, and I asked my kids what they thought my favorite food was. One boy raised his hand and said, "That's easy, Mrs. Delzer, it's COFFEE!" I laughed until I had tears streaming down my face. My favorite kind of coffee is Starbucks Blonde, and I brew up a cup using my Keurig every morning. I also love getting to drive to our many Starbucks or Caribou Coffee in our new city often!

8. I get to give a TEDx Talk on July 23, 2015. My topic is: Our World is Changing, Our Schools Need to Change With It. You can read the amazing story about how I got the spot to give a TEDx Talk here

9. I have a sister that is a real life CSI. She gets to live in the most beautiful city in the world: Bend, Oregon. She will tell you her job is nothing like the TV show, and not everything is solved with the blue light! I think Tori and I are a lot alike, but I would not last 5 minutes at her job! She's the peanut butter to my jelly, and I love her lots! She just had a baby boy named Kaysen, and he holds my heart in his tiny hands for sure. I get daily pictures and videos of him that melt my heart. My brother is a manager at Digi-Key. He is my little brother, but we always joke that he was bigger than me since the day he was born. I am so proud of the responsible young man he has become. He bought a house two blocks away, and we love seeing him often.  I love him to pieces!

10. Sometimes, I get to teach teachers! I am a technology addict, and I love blogging, tweeting, iPads, and learning new tech things! Over the last 2 years, I have been lucky to be the presenter and speaker at several different technology sessions. I have trained teachers from all over the Midwest on Teacher Blogs, Twitter in the classroom, Remind 101 and other Parent Communication Tools, Virtual Exploration, Developing a Personal Learning Network (PLN) on Twitter, Instagram, and Blogger, and iPads and Apps for the Primary grades.  I love sharing my passion for technology with others, and I am very lucky that this is a path my job has taken me on recently. I would like to continue traveling around speaking to educators, or maybe even teach a college class to future teachers down the road while continuing to teach 2nd grade. In the next few months, I will be the Keynote for a ND STEM conference (where my students will lead a breakout session afterwards), give two different presentations at the ND Reading Conference, teach a summer STEM camp for kids at NDSU, and deliver several sessions at the Metro Tech Camp. If you're in the area, I'd love to meet YOU! You can also see feedback from people who have received professional development from me along with speaking/consulting session descriptions on my blog.
Sheila Jane is just THE SWEETEST!
You can watch my interview with Sheila Jane Teaching, Essential Technology Tips for Teachers, by clicking here. If you want the 15 minute version of what I talk about in some of my professional development sessions and tons of resources to implement tomorrow, this interview is perfect for you!
I was honored to be a featured EduCelebrity in March!
They packed the room at TIES14 to listen to me speak! #humbling

Thanks for taking some time to get to know me!  I would love to get to know you better, so stop by my blog and say hello, or comment right below this post! You can also find me on InstagramTeachers Pay TeachersPinterest, and Twitter!

Connect with Our Classrooms!

I'm teaming up with Sarah Young at A Rocky Top Teacher to to bring you an exciting opportunity!

We recently did a Mystery Google Hangout (GHO) together and it was an AMAZING experience. We posted about it on our Instagram pages, and got a ton of feedback from super teachers that wanted to do Mystery Skypes or GHOs with us, so Sarah created this handy dandy spreadsheet for everyone to sign up on using Google Docs. You can sign up to hangout with both of us!

You might be asking, so what the heck is this anyways? Basically, we sign up for a date to hang out virtually. Sarah or I will call your classroom using the information you provide. Students will take turns asking and answering questions about your location to see who can guess correctly first. The GHO or Skype ends when both classrooms have successfully guessed the location. So, you might be wondering... what are some good questions for my kids to ask?

If you're looking for a few more amazing resources, you can check here and here. Assigning roles for Mystery Skypes or GHOs is completely optional .You can read more about this process here.

So, are you feeling ready? Don't worry if this is your first time, we will welcome you with open arms! We know that speaking and listening skills are huge in the common core standards, and GHOs and Skyping provides an authentic audience to practice these skills. The beautiful thing about teaching in the 21st century is that we can connect seamlessly with the world. Let's do it! I'll leave you with a few pictures of our hangout with Ms. Young's rockstars.

Found the Gold Freebie Hop

I am so excited to be participating in my first blog hop with a collaborative blog I was asked to join called  A Spark of Inspiration! We found the pot of gold after St. Patrick's Day, and it was FULL of freebies from some of my favorite teacher authors. Be sure to follow along through the whole hop by clicking the pot of gold on the bottom of this post. Trust me, you don't want to miss any of these amazing products we have put together for you FOR FREE!

Thank you Ashley Schroeder for sending these fabulous teachers my way on this hop. If you don't know Ashley, you should. She is one of the hardest working 2nd grade teachers I know. We have connected on social media for well over a year now, and we will finally meet this summer. I will probably give her a running hug. She is just a doll! I know you will all love her products!

Here's what I am giving on this hop! My kids can always use extra practice reviewing their syllables, so I created this simple spring syllables (how's that for alliteration) flip flap book for you. Just click the picture below or this link to snag it for FREE!

Up next on this hop, another teacher I honestly admire from my head to my toes. I met Sarah in Atlanta in February, and we are seriously just two peas in a pod. Her positive attitude and sweet, bubbly personality drew me in right away. Not to mention, she is honestly one of THE BEST second grade teachers I have ever met. We have become good friends because of this crazy teaching social networking thing. I might have shed some tears when I had to say goodbye to her in Atlanta. Click the image below to visit her blog and snag her freebie. While you are there, be sure to snoop around a little bit. I know you will love what you see.

2015 EDExpo ~ Top 10!

Hi friends and families!  Last weekend, I had the honor of being selected to attend the EdExpo in Atlanta last week along with 50 other bloggers from around the country! I need to give a huge shout out to Sherron Washington for organizing it all! It was a fabulous weekend full of blogger meet-ups, site seeing, and lots of time to chat with teachers. I can't wait to share more about it with you! My task at the Expo was to walk around the rows and rows of vendors, chat with them, try their products, and make a list of the top 10 products that I felt were most useful in the classroom today. Once each of us made our personal top 10 list, the lists were compiled to make a top 10 list for the entire expo.  It was a very cool experience to give my opinions and input to these vendors and it is so fun for me to be able to share these products with you, my readers! Today, I'm honored to share the overall top 10 list with you (there are actually 12 products because there were 2 ties).

Remember, to learn more about any of the images, you can just click right on the image to be directed to the product website. If you are interested in purchasing any of the products shown above, please visit the Edmarket page to find a local retailer near you OR an online retailer - just click the picture below to head over now!
